larch

Reddish, robust, rustic.

The heartwood of the larch is characterized by its reddish-brown color, which can be more or less intense and darkens to brownish over time. The dark annual rings in the larch wood form a contrasting structure. Larch wood is one of the harder and heavier softwoods, is robust and weather-resistant and is the traditional alpine wood par excellence. This means that it naturally has its own rustic flair.

The wood of the larch

Larch wood is the name given to the wood of the larch, of which there are 20 species. As with pine or Douglas fir, there is a clear difference between sapwood and heartwood in larch. The sapwood is light yellow to reddish, while the heartwood is much darker, bright red to reddish brown. While only the particularly robust heartwood is used as construction wood, the sapwood is also used in interior design. Due to the decorative contrast, both types of wood are often used together for woodwork, e.g. for stairs, railings, wall paneling, doors, parquet and or as veneer in furniture construction. With the increasing avoidance of exotic imported woods, larch wood is also increasingly used as a substitute for tropical wood.

Larch in the kitchen

The fast-growing larch wood is usually known as decking or construction wood for outdoor use. We believe that there is more to it than that! With our boards made of larch wood, you can bring alpine charm and a piece of "real forest" into your kitchen. In addition to our Hob covers we provide End grain cutting boardsSnack boards and Gliding boards from the beautiful coniferous wood. We use plywood panels made from larch heartwood, which do not warp even when exposed to moisture and are guaranteed to always remain straight.

Larch + end grain

Truly impressive end grain cutting boards can be made from larch wood. The strong color contrast between the dark annual rings and the light growth wood creates an almost dramatic pattern in the end grain. The way they are processed makes end grain boards very robust, but in combination with the hard, tough larch wood and its good weather resistance, you get a long-lasting companion for the kitchen. for larch end grain cutting board

Larch, the tree

The larch is the only conifer that sheds its leaves in winter. We'll show you everything else you need to know about larches in our favorite wood tree portrait.

Tree shape

All 20 species of larch are deciduous trees that shed their needle-like leaves in autumn. The European larch reaches heights of around 40 metres, while American species grow even higher.

bark

The bark of the larch is smooth and green to grey-brown when young and relatively quickly becomes a bark up to 10 centimetres thick, deeply furrowed, grey-brown on the outside, irregularly scaly with reddish-brown furrows.

Wood

The sapwood and heartwood of the larch differ significantly. The lighter yellow sapwood layer is often only a few centimeters thick. Inside is the darker reddish-brown heartwood. It is heavy, hard and tough and contains more resin than pine wood, for example.

Leaves

The needle-shaped leaves grow in large numbers on short shoots and singly on long shoots. The leaf cushions are densely covered in fluffy yellow hairs. The needles are between 10 and 30 mm long and 0.5 to 1 mm wide. The leaves turn bright yellow in autumn and fall off.

fruit

The mature, upright cones of the larch are light brown, egg-shaped and are 2.5 to 4 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm wide. The shiny, dark brownish-grey seeds, which only ripen the following spring, are 4 mm long and 2.5 mm wide and egg-shaped-wedge-shaped. or triangular-ovate. They have light brown, ovate wings.
