What dimensions for my cutting board?

Eichenholz Hirnholz Schneidebrett

Have you ever asked yourself why Cutting boards made of wood usually comes in fixed widths/thicknesses?

We'll explain why this is the case. 💡

The thing about stability

Basically, every wooden cutting board should be at least 2.5 cm thick. Wood is alive and deforms due to external influences such as heat 🔥 and moisture 💦. A wooden board that is thinner than 2.5 cm would lose stability and deform.

Also important: the optics

Depending on the size of the wooden board, there is a rule of thumb for the appropriate thickness. The following rule can be remembered for wooden cutting boards:

The wood thickness should be at least 1/15th of the board width

If you stick to this formula, the dimensions will harmonize well with each other. The exception here is, of course, the chopping block, as this has to withstand stronger blows.

The criteria of use

Before you buy a wooden board just because of its appearance, you should consider the following criteria:

How much space do I have available?

Beforehand, think carefully about where in your kitchen you spend most of your time with your board and how much space there is. A board that wobbles because it has to stand halfway on the cooking surface or hangs over is no fun 😊

Will the board stay in place or do I want to store it away?

Given the size and severity of the Cutting boardIt is important whether the board can stay in its chosen place or whether you have to put it away after each use and cleaning. With a large and heavy board, this can be a nuisance more quickly than you think. 🤔

How do I clean the board (sink size)?

Think about the cleaning process and where you want to leave the board to dry. If the board absolutely won't fit in the sink, washing it can be difficult.

What are my rights regarding the use of the wooden board?

Is the board just for cutting or do I cut such large quantities that the food stays on the board until all the ingredients have been chopped?

If you only need the board for cutting, a board measuring 40×30 cm is sufficient.

At a Cutting board With the dimensions 60×40 you can easily collect your cuttings.

Always consider the handling of the board; lifting the board over the pot 💪 to push the ingredients in can be more difficult at this size.

Because:

The larger the surface, the thicker it should be in order to remain dimensionally stable.
